Ylocos Fully Diverse Culture : Kannawidan Ylocos Festival '22
Kannawidan Festival is indeed one
of the most beautiful festivals in the country. You can not only see their
products, you can also see its people showcasing of indigenous performances,
religious rituals, as well cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes.
The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival encourages the younger generations to learn the
indigenous songs and dances of the province of Ilocos Sur.
As the final week of January
comes into action, Biguenos and other Ilocos Surians all gather in the Tamag
Grounds to celebrate one of the events that would set the bar for the year, the
Kannawidan. This celebration is very special to the hearts ilocanos, because
these are days filled with joy in different activities, and not only that there
is also a marketplace that consists of food courts, botanical shops, furniture
stores, bonsai displays and an art gallery all located in the main venue.
Kannawidan Ylocos Festival 2019
was the last time the event got big, because of the onset of quarantines and
lockdowns caused by the virus, the celebration of Kannawidan 2022 was
constricted with strict protocols just like requiring a vaccination card and ID
and not letting anyone under the age of 16, especially without a face mask.
Despite these, it was still a major improvement over the past 2 years. Headed by Gov. Ryan Luis Singson, together
with Vice Governor Jeremias C. Singson, Kannawidan 2022 was held. During the
opening ceremony a grand show of fireworks is always expected to symbolize the
beginning of the Festival. The second
night, the “Saniata ti Ylocos” was held and we witnessed the coronation of a
Vigan representative for the first time and the queen responsible was Richelle
Anne Puesto. The whole celebration as wrapped up with the LGBTQ night on the
third day, the program was great in raising the anti-discrimination against the
gays.
The festival is such an important
occasion that can’t be missed. it only happens once a year. A year without
Kannawidan in Ilocos Sur is not a complete year, anymore. It is even the first
festival to be celebrated as it indicates that there will be more happiness and
fun to come. So even in the middle of a health crisis, even in a depressing
moment, that precious festival is still celebrated. Why? It is simply because
the festival is already in the heart of every Ilocanos. To not forget is what
matters. To good times and bad. Sure Ilocos Sur.
